Jellyfish photo contest in Israel

15. 1. 2021

In an effort to draw attention of the public toward the wonderful world of jellyfish, the Israeli citizen science initiative, Meduzot Ba’am, that hosts a citizen tracking website for jellyfish in Israel, www.meduzot.co.il and is both orchestrated and closely accompanied by Dror Angel and Dor Edelist from GoJelly and by Yael Mor from the Israeli Ecological Society set up a jellyfish photo contest toward the end of December 2020.

The contest was broadcast via social media and by means of newsletters and mailing lists to the Israeli public, and everyone was invited to participate, with the lure of cash prizes for the top photo’s. Representatives from academia, marine NGO’s, surfers, fishers and the underwater diving community (as well as representatives from GoJelly) were members of the panel that evaluated the photo’s and on 31.1.2021 the winners (there were 187 participants) were announced and a clip summarizing the contest was published and distributed – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eywtnq7nl2s&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=DovevShoshan.
